Ingredients:
For the Steaks
- 500 g ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Onion Gravy
- 2 tablespoons butter or oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- Make the Steaks
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Form into 4–5 oval-shaped patties. - Brown the Patties
Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a small amount of oil. Add the patties and cook for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside. They will finish cooking in the gravy. - Cook the Onions
In the same skillet, add butter or oil. Add sliced onions and cook over medium heat for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly caramelized. - Make the Gravy
Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring constantly. Add Worcestershire sauce and bring to a gentle simmer. - Simmer the Steaks
Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover and simmer on low heat for 15–20 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened. - Serve
Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
Serving Tips
- Mashed potatoes are the classic pairing for soaking up the gravy.
- Add mushrooms to the onion gravy for extra depth of flavor.
- Leftovers reheat beautifully the next day.
