Outback Steakhouse Bloomin’ Onion Recipe

Step 1 – Prepare the Onion

  • Peel the onion and trim the non-root end.

  • Place root-side down and cut into 16–20 sections, leaving ½ inch uncut at the root.

  • Gently separate the petals.

Step 2 – Make the Seasoned Flour

  • In a large bowl, combine flour, paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.

Step 3 – Make the Batter

  • In another bowl, whisk eggs and milk until smooth.

Step 4 – Coat the Onion

  • Dip onion into seasoned flour, coating all petals. Shake off excess.

  • Dip into egg mixture, then back into flour for a second coating.

Step 5 – Heat the Oil

  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).

  • Oil should be deep enough to fully submerge the onion.

Step 6 – Fry the Onion

  • Carefully lower onion root-side up into the oil.

  • Fry for 5–7 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.

  • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Step 7 – Make the Dipping Sauce

  • In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne.

  • Adjust seasoning to taste.

Step 8 – Serve

  • Place onion on a platter.

  • Serve hot with dipping sauce in the center or on the side.
