Fried Pickles

  1. Heat the oil
Pour 2–3 inches of vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed pan or Dutch oven. Heat to 375°F (190°C) with a thermometer, about 10 minutes.

  2. Prepare the breading station

    • In one bowl, mix flour, salt, pepper, paprika, cayenne, and garlic powder.

    • In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.

  3. Bread the pickles
    Working in small batches:

    • Coat pickle slices in seasoned flour.

    • Dip in the buttermilk and egg mixture.

    • Return to flour for a second coating.

  4. Fry the pickles
Gently lower coated pickles into hot oil. Fry about 90 seconds per side until golden and crisp.
Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Allow oil to return to 375°F before frying the next batch.

  5. Make the dipping sauce (optional)
Mix all sauce ingredients in a small bowl until smooth.
